Structure
Greece is a presidential parliamentary republic. The president is head of state. The president is elected by parliament to a five-year term and is eligible for a second term. The prime minister is head of government. The president appoints the prime minister .The unicameral Parliament has three hundred members elected by popular vote for four-year terms. Became part of the European Union in 1981.
Political Landscape
Major political issues include debt, unemployment, and illegal immigration.High levels of immigration are widely viewed as a burden on Greece's society and economy.Greece has had few problems among political parties until recently. Generally, there is little cooperation among political parties on the national level. Extremist parties have become more popular since the economic downturn.
Government and the People
All citizens are able to vote at 18. Voter turnout is usually high but they have been seeing a decrease in turnouts through recent elections. Since the eurozone crisis, Greeks have less faith in their government and believe that the politicians are self-serving.
Personal Opinion
I think the government is fine but the politicians are corrupting their government and not doing as they said they would.
